Ducted air conditioning

Ducted air conditioning hides the indoor fan unit in a loft, ceiling void or cupboard and delivers air through insulated ducts to slim slot or square grilles in each room. Nothing hangs on the walls, which makes it the cleanest-looking option for renovations, extensions and new builds.

Which homes suit ducted systems?

Ducted systems need space for the fan unit and the ducts: a loft, a dropped ceiling, a bulkhead or a deep cupboard. They are easiest to fit during a renovation or new build when ceilings are open, and they work well for top-floor bedrooms served from the loft.

Can different rooms be controlled separately?

A single ducted unit serves its rooms as one zone by default. Motorised zone dampers can give separate room control, or a second ducted unit can split the house into two zones. We set out the zoning options and their cost on the quote.

What about noise and maintenance?

Because the fan sits away from the room, ducted systems are very quiet in use. The unit needs an access hatch for filter cleaning and servicing, which we design in from the start.

HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

UK middle prices. London and the South East are typically higher and much of the North, Scotland and Wales a little lower; see your area page for a local figure.

FAQ

Ducted air conditioning: your questions

Can ducted air conditioning go into an existing house?

Often, yes, if there is a loft or space to drop a ceiling or build a bulkhead. It is simplest in top-floor rooms. We check voids and routes on survey before recommending it.

Do the ducts lose cooling?

Properly insulated and sealed ducts lose very little. We keep runs short and insulate everything in the loft.

Is ducted more expensive than wall units?

Yes, usually by 30–60% for the same rooms, because of the ductwork and building work. In return there is nothing on the walls and it is very quiet.

How do I clean the filters?

Through the access hatch or a return-air grille with a filter behind it. We show you on handover and include it in the annual service.
