Home air conditioning in the West Midlands

In the West Midlands, sizing for winter heating first and then checking summer cooling usually gives the best all-year system. Hot spells in the West Midlands are shorter but intense, especially in loft rooms and rooms with big windows.

Ask at your Birmingham survey whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could apply to your home. Top-floor flats and HMO rooms in Birmingham can get uncomfortably hot in summer, which tenants notice first. No two rooms in Birmingham gain or lose heat in quite the same way, which is exactly why rooms are measured before sizing. Design-led units, slim floor consoles and concealed ducted systems are all options where a standard white wall unit would look out of place. Existing systems need care too: an annual service, an occasional deep clean and prompt repairs keep them efficient and quiet.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

The West Midlands is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.
