Wall-mounted air conditioning

A wall-mounted split air conditioner is a two-part system: a slim indoor unit fixed high on an inside wall and a compact outdoor unit outside, joined by insulated refrigerant pipes, a drain and a cable through a single core-drilled hole. It cools in summer, heats efficiently in winter, and is the quickest and most affordable fixed system for one room.

Who it suits

  • Living rooms and bedrooms
  • Home offices
  • Rooms that overheat in summer
  • Adding efficient heating to one room

What size of unit does a room need?

Size is set by heat gain, not just floor area. A 12 m² bedroom facing north might need 2.5 kW, while a 25 m² south-facing lounge with big windows can need 5 kW. We measure the room, the glazing and the orientation on survey and size the unit from that, because an oversized unit short-cycles and an undersized one runs flat out and still feels warm.

Where do the indoor and outdoor units go?

The indoor unit sits high on a wall with clear airflow across the room, ideally on or near an outside wall so the pipe run is short. The outdoor unit goes on a ground-level stand or a galvanised wall bracket where it can breathe and be reached for servicing. Pipework is run neatly in slim white trunking outside, or hidden in a wall or ceiling void where the building allows.

Is it noisy?

Modern inverter units are quiet: indoor units on low fan are typically around 19–25 dB(A), roughly a whisper, and outdoor units are placed to keep neighbours comfortable. In England and Wales the outdoor unit usually has to meet the MCS 020(a) noise level of 37 dB(A) at the nearest neighbouring window to fall under permitted development, and we check that before fixing anything.

What is included

Wall-mounted air conditioning prices

Guide prices for wall-mounted air conditioning run from £1,150 to £2,950 per room, including VAT, depending on the options below. One indoor unit and one outdoor unit, standard 3–5 m pipe run, typical 2.5–5 kW system. The survey turns this into a fixed written price.

Essential

£1,150–£1,650
inc VAT

Reliable 2.5–3.5 kW unit for a bedroom or study, standard pipe run, basic remote.

Balanced choice

Popular

£1,550–£2,150
inc VAT

Quieter mid-range unit with Wi-Fi control and better seasonal efficiency for a living room.

Premium

£2,050–£2,950
inc VAT

Design-led or very quiet model, larger capacity or concealed pipework through a void.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

UK middle prices. London and the South East are typically higher and much of the North, Scotland and Wales a little lower; see your area page for a local figure.

FAQ

Wall-mounted air conditioning: your questions

How long does a wall-mounted air conditioner take to fit?

Most single-room systems are fitted and commissioned in one day. The engineers drill one hole, fix both units, run the pipework, pressure test and vacuum the system, then commission it and show you how it works.

Does a wall-mounted unit need its own electrical circuit?

Many 2.5–3.5 kW units can run from a suitable fused spur, but larger units often need a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit. We check your board on survey and price any electrical work in the written quote.

Can it heat as well as cool?

Yes. Almost every split system sold today is a reversible heat pump, so it heats efficiently in winter as well as cooling in summer.

How often does it need servicing?

We recommend a service once a year for domestic systems: filters, coils, drain, electrical checks and performance readings. Many manufacturers also expect annual servicing to keep warranty terms valid.
