Wall-mounted air conditioning across Tyne and Wear

A single wall-mounted unit is often all a bedroom or sunny living room in Newcastle upon Tyne needs. Where a home in Newcastle upon Tyne faces the street, the outdoor unit usually goes at the rear, out of sight. In the North East, sizing for winter heating and then checking summer cooling usually gives the right system.

Prices in Tyne and Wear

Our North East England guide price for wall-mounted air conditioning is £1,045–£2,695 per room, VAT included. Labour rates in North East England keep this slightly under the national middle. The biggest variables are the pipe route, access for the outdoor unit and the state of the consumer unit, all of which the survey settles. On our North East England figures, the Popular option (quieter mid-range unit with Wi-Fi control and better seasonal efficiency for a living room) is about £1,445–£1,995.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

The survey

The free survey is where the real price is set: room measurements, pipe and drain routes, electrical checks and the outdoor unit position, all written into your quote. We book surveys in Tyne and Wear at a time that suits you, including early evenings by arrangement, and send the written quote afterwards.

FAQ

Wall-mounted air conditioning in Tyne and Wear

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Tyne and Wear?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

How much does wall-mounted air conditioning cost in Tyne and Wear?

Our North East England guide range is £1,045–£2,695 per room, including VAT.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

Which towns in Tyne and Wear do you cover?

All of Tyne and Wear, including Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, South Shields and Gateshead. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Can it heat as well as cool?

Yes. Almost every split system sold today is a reversible heat pump, so it heats efficiently in winter as well as cooling in summer.

Does a wall-mounted unit need its own electrical circuit?

Many 2.5–3.5 kW units can run from a suitable fused spur, but larger units often need a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit. We check your board on survey and price any electrical work in the written quote.
