Air conditioning for period and listed homes

Period and listed homes need air conditioning planned around the building: cornicing, panelling, sash windows, solid walls and, for listed buildings, the need for consent before anything is fixed. The usual approach is low-level console units or concealed ducted systems, outdoor units placed out of sight, and pipe routes that avoid historic fabric.

Do I need consent for a listed building?

Yes, almost always. Fixing an outdoor unit to a listed building, drilling through historic walls or altering interiors usually needs listed building consent from the council, and works without it can be a criminal offence. We provide drawings, photos and product information for your application and do not start work until consent is granted.

Which units suit period rooms?

Floor consoles sit at skirting height and can replace an old radiator position, keeping walls and cornicing clear. Ducted units hidden in a loft or ceiling void leave only a slim grille. High wall units are used where they will not interrupt features.

What about solid walls and conservation areas?

Solid brick and stone walls take careful core drilling to avoid damage. In conservation areas, outdoor units on elevations facing a road usually need planning permission, so we place them at the rear or in a lightwell or garden.

FAQ

Air conditioning for period and listed homes: your questions

Who applies for listed building consent?

The owner applies to the council. We provide the drawings, photos and product details the application needs.

How long does consent take?

Councils aim to decide within eight weeks in most cases, but it varies. We plan the install once consent is granted.

Can the outdoor unit go in a lightwell or basement area?

Often, if it has enough airflow and can be serviced. We check this on survey.
