Air conditioning for extensions and kitchen-diners

Open-plan extensions and kitchen-diners combine large areas of glazing, roof lanterns, cooking heat and a lot of floor space, which makes them some of the hardest rooms in a home to keep comfortable. A correctly sized system, sometimes two indoor units, holds an even temperature across the whole space and heats it efficiently in winter.

Why are extensions so hard to cool?

Roof lanterns and glazed doors let in a lot of sun, flat roofs heat up during the day, and ovens and hobs add their own heat. The space can also be long and narrow. We size from the glazing area, the roof and the layout, and if one unit cannot throw air evenly to both ends we recommend two.

When is the best time to plan it?

During the build, before plastering, so pipes and cables can be hidden in the walls or roof void. It can still be added later with a neat surface route, usually on the side wall of the extension.

What about the kitchen?

Indoor units should not sit directly above hobs or ovens, where grease and heat build up. We place them where they can reach the cooking area without being in the line of steam and fumes, and they work alongside your cooker hood, not instead of it.

FAQ

Air conditioning for extensions and kitchen-diners: your questions

Will one unit be enough for my extension?

Often, if the space is a simple shape. Long, L-shaped or very glazed spaces may need two units for even comfort. We decide on survey.

Can the unit go on the extension roof?

The outdoor unit can go on a flat roof on a proper stand if access and noise allow. A pitched-roof install needs planning permission.

Should I wait until the extension is finished?

It is better to plan it during the build so pipework is hidden, but it can be fitted afterwards.
