Storage and electric heater replacement in Birmingham
Old storage heaters in Birmingham homes are removed and recycled as part of the replacement. Away from the coast, West Midlands summers can turn hot quickly, and bedrooms under the roof are the first to suffer.
Flats and bungalows in Birmingham that have never had gas are the usual candidates for replacing storage heaters. As well as Birmingham itself, our West Midlands coverage takes in Coventry, Wolverhampton and the towns around them. We cover B1, B2, B3, B4, B5 and 3 more and the streets around them.
Prices in Birmingham
Our West Midlands guide price for storage and electric heater replacement is £3,395–£10,245 for 3–5 rooms, VAT included. That is broadly in line with national guide prices. Concealed pipework, access equipment for high walls and any electrical work are what push prices towards the upper figure. On our West Midlands figures, the Bungalow or house option (four rooms on one outdoor unit) is about £4,845–£7,795.
Small flat
Two or three rooms replacing storage heaters.
Bungalow or house
Four rooms on one outdoor unit.
Larger home
Five or more rooms or two outdoor units.
Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.
Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.
Planning and permissions
Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.
Birmingham is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.
The survey
The free survey is where the real price is set: room measurements, pipe and drain routes, electrical checks and the outdoor unit position, all written into your quote. A survey in Birmingham usually takes one to two hours. We measure the rooms, check the walls and the consumer unit, agree the outdoor unit position with you and photograph the pipe routes.
