Home air conditioning in Cornwall

South West summers are milder on the coast, but sheltered towns and south-facing rooms still overheat, and efficient winter heating matters just as much. Damp South West winters make the dehumidifying side of a heat pump almost as useful as its cooling.

For Truro landlords, swapping storage heaters for a heat pump is one of the more effective EPC improvements. Ducted systems suit Truro loft conversions and new extensions where ceilings are being boarded anyway. For bedrooms in Truro, we place the outdoor unit at the back of the house, away from neighbours' windows. Many homes start with one or two rooms. A system can be designed so that more rooms are added later without replacing the outdoor unit. Flats, listed homes and garden rooms each bring their own questions, from freeholder consent to cable routes, and we cover them at survey.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

If your home in Cornwall is replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and no gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, an MCS-certified air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which the MCS-certified installer claims and deducts from the price.
