Air conditioning for period and listed homes in Cardiff
Wet South Wales winters make a heat pump's quiet, even heating and dehumidifying mode useful well beyond summer. If your home in Cardiff is Victorian, Edwardian or older, a console or concealed system often works better than a high wall unit.
If your Cardiff home is listed or in a conservation area, consent comes first and we provide what the council needs to see. Cardiff is one of the main towns we cover in South Glamorgan, alongside Barry and Penarth. Coverage includes CF10, CF11, CF14, CF15, CF23 and CF24.
Prices in Cardiff
In South and Mid Wales, our guide range for air conditioning for period and listed homes is £1,495–£7,295 per home, one room upwards, including VAT. That sits a little below the UK middle, reflecting typical South and Mid Wales labour rates. What moves a quote in Cardiff up or down is mostly pipe length, how high the outdoor unit goes, and whether a new electrical circuit is needed. On our South and Mid Wales figures, the Concealed option (ducted unit from a loft or void serving one or two rooms) is about £3,145–£4,995.
Console
Low-level console in place of a radiator, rear outdoor unit.
Concealed
Ducted unit from a loft or void serving one or two rooms.
Mixed
Consoles downstairs and ducted upstairs on one system.
Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.
Listed building consent
Listed homes in Cardiff need listed building consent from the council before any work, and permitted development does not apply to them. We plan low-impact routes, keep outdoor units out of sight and provide the details a consent application needs. Wales removed its old 3 m boundary rule on 1 June 2026, so most houses in Cardiff can now have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the MCS 020a noise condition. Listed buildings still need consent, and conservation areas have extra restrictions.
The survey
On a survey in Cardiff the engineer looks at room size, glazing, the route for pipes and drains, the electrics and where the outdoor unit can sit quietly, then the written quote follows. Surveys in Cardiff cover heat gain, pipe routes, electrics, access and noise to the nearest neighbour, so surprises on the day are rare.
