Repairs and replacement

Leak detection and regassing

Regassing an air conditioning system means recharging it with refrigerant by weight after a leak has been found and repaired. Systems are sealed, so low refrigerant always means a leak; simply topping up without repair is poor practice and against the F-gas rules, which require leaks to be repaired.

Leak detection and regassing
  • Visit price agreed first
  • Refrigerant work by F-gas certified engineers
  • Price fixed in writing
  • England, Scotland, Wales and NI
  • Cools in summer, heats in winter

Who it suits

  • Systems not cooling properly
  • Units icing up
  • Systems repeatedly needing gas
  • Older systems with a known leak

How do you find a leak?

With electronic detectors, bubble solution and, where needed, nitrogen pressure testing of sections of pipework. Flare joints, valves and old repairs are common culprits.

What about older refrigerants?

R22 cannot be topped up with new or recycled R22 at all, so an R22 system with a leak is normally replaced. R410A can still be serviced, but single-split systems using it can no longer be placed on the GB market.

What is included

  • Leak search with calibrated detectors
  • Repair of joints or components
  • Nitrogen pressure test
  • Deep vacuum
  • Recharge by weight to the nameplate
  • F-gas record entry

FAQ

Leak detection and regassing: your questions

Can you just top up my air conditioning?

Not without finding and repairing the leak. Topping up a leaking system wastes money and releases greenhouse gases.

Is R22 still allowed?

Existing R22 systems can run, but they cannot be recharged with R22. A leak usually means replacement.

How long does a regas last?

Indefinitely, if the leak was properly repaired. Sealed systems should not lose refrigerant.
