Storage and electric heater replacement across Powys

For Newtown landlords, swapping storage heaters for a heat pump is one of the more effective EPC improvements. Flats and bungalows in Newtown that have never had gas are the usual candidates for replacing storage heaters. Wet South Wales winters make a heat pump's quiet, even heating and dehumidifying mode useful well beyond summer.

Prices in Powys

Budget around £3,145–£9,595 for 3–5 rooms including VAT for storage and electric heater replacement in and around Powys. Labour rates in South and Mid Wales keep this slightly under the national middle. What moves a quote in Powys up or down is mostly pipe length, how high the outdoor unit goes, and whether a new electrical circuit is needed. As an example, the Bungalow or house option (four rooms on one outdoor unit) would typically be £4,545–£7,295 here.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 1 June 2026, Welsh permitted development rules for outdoor units closely match England's: up to 1.5 m³, two units on a detached home, one on other homes, and MCS 020a noise compliance. Listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas have extra restrictions on units facing a road.

Powys is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

Surveys in Powys cover heat gain, pipe routes, electrics, access and noise to the nearest neighbour, so surprises on the day are rare. At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote.

FAQ

Storage and electric heater replacement in Powys

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Powys?

Since 1 June 2026, most houses in Wales can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020a noise conditions. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas need more care. We check on survey.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

How much does storage and electric heater replacement cost in Powys?

Our South and Mid Wales guide range is £3,145–£9,595 for 3–5 rooms, including VAT.

Which towns in Powys do you cover?

All of Powys, including Brecon, Llandrindod Wells, Newtown and Welshpool. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Do I lose my Economy 7 tariff?

You can stay on it or switch. Heat pumps run when heat is needed, so many households move to a standard or smart tariff.

Can landlords use this to improve an EPC?

Replacing direct electric heating with a heat pump often improves an EPC rating. The exact change depends on the property, so ask a domestic energy assessor.
