Storage and electric heater replacement across Oxfordshire

For Oxford landlords, swapping storage heaters for a heat pump is one of the more effective EPC improvements. Flats and bungalows in Oxford that have never had gas are the usual candidates for replacing storage heaters. In the South East, loft rooms and glazed extensions can climb well above the outside temperature on a sunny afternoon.

Prices in Oxfordshire

Guide prices around Oxfordshire run from £4,195 to £12,745 for 3–5 rooms including VAT. That is above the UK middle, mainly because labour and access cost more in South East England. The biggest variables are the pipe route, access for the outdoor unit and the state of the consumer unit, all of which the survey settles. For reference, the Bungalow or house option in Oxfordshire (four rooms on one outdoor unit) usually comes to about £6,045–£9,695.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

In England, most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it is no larger than 1.5 m³, meets the MCS 020(a) noise limit of 37 dB(A) at the nearest neighbour's window, and there are no more than two on a detached house or one on other houses. Listed buildings need consent.

Oxfordshire is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

Surveys in Oxfordshire cover heat gain, pipe routes, electrics, access and noise to the nearest neighbour, so surprises on the day are rare. At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote.

Which towns in Oxfordshire do you cover?

All of Oxfordshire, including Oxford, Banbury, Abingdon and Bicester. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Can landlords use this to improve an EPC?

Replacing direct electric heating with a heat pump often improves an EPC rating. The exact change depends on the property, so ask a domestic energy assessor.

Will an air-to-air heat pump be cheaper than storage heaters?

In most homes running costs fall significantly, because the heat pump uses a fraction of the electricity for the same heat.
