Storage and electric heater replacement across Gwent

Flats and bungalows in Newport that have never had gas are the usual candidates for replacing storage heaters. For Newport landlords, swapping storage heaters for a heat pump is one of the more effective EPC improvements. In South and Mid Wales, efficient heating is often as important as cooling.

Prices in Gwent

Budget around £3,145–£9,595 for 3–5 rooms including VAT for storage and electric heater replacement in and around Gwent. Labour rates in South and Mid Wales keep this slightly under the national middle. Quotes move with the length of the pipe run, where the outdoor unit can sit and how much electrical work the job needs. On our South and Mid Wales figures, the Bungalow or house option (four rooms on one outdoor unit) is about £4,545–£7,295.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 1 June 2026, Welsh permitted development rules for outdoor units closely match England's: up to 1.5 m³, two units on a detached home, one on other homes, and MCS 020a noise compliance. Listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas have extra restrictions on units facing a road.

Gwent is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

We book surveys in Gwent at a time that suits you, including early evenings by arrangement, and send the written quote afterwards. On a survey in Gwent the engineer looks at room size, glazing, the route for pipes and drains, the electrics and where the outdoor unit can sit quietly, then the written quote follows.

FAQ

Storage and electric heater replacement in Gwent

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

How much does storage and electric heater replacement cost in Gwent?

Our South and Mid Wales guide range is £3,145–£9,595 for 3–5 rooms, including VAT.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Gwent?

Since 1 June 2026, most houses in Wales can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020a noise conditions. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas need more care. We check on survey.

Which towns in Gwent do you cover?

All of Gwent, including Newport, Gwent, Cwmbran, Pontypool and Ebbw Vale. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Do I lose my Economy 7 tariff?

You can stay on it or switch. Heat pumps run when heat is needed, so many households move to a standard or smart tariff.

Can landlords use this to improve an EPC?

Replacing direct electric heating with a heat pump often improves an EPC rating. The exact change depends on the property, so ask a domestic energy assessor.
