Storage and electric heater replacement in Plymouth

For Plymouth landlords, swapping storage heaters for a heat pump is one of the more effective EPC improvements. Damp South West winters make the dehumidifying side of a heat pump almost as useful as its cooling.

Flats and bungalows in Plymouth that have never had gas are the usual candidates for replacing storage heaters. Plymouth is one of the main towns we cover in Devon, alongside Exeter and Paignton. Coverage includes PL2 and PL4.

Prices in Plymouth

Guide prices around Plymouth run from £3,450 to £10,450 for 3–5 rooms including VAT. It sits near the middle of UK prices. Concealed pipework, access equipment for high walls and any electrical work are what push prices towards the upper figure. On our South West England figures, the Bungalow or house option (four rooms on one outdoor unit) is about £4,950–£7,950.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

In England, most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it is no larger than 1.5 m³, meets the MCS 020(a) noise limit of 37 dB(A) at the nearest neighbour's window, and there are no more than two on a detached house or one on other houses. Listed buildings need consent.

If your home in Plymouth is replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and no gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, an MCS-certified air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which the MCS-certified installer claims and deducts from the price.

The survey

At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote. The free survey is where the real price is set: room measurements, pipe and drain routes, electrical checks and the outdoor unit position, all written into your quote.

FAQ

Common questions in Plymouth

Is the survey in Plymouth really free?

Yes, for new installations. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead.

How soon can you survey in Plymouth?

We offer survey dates when you enquire. Early summer is the busiest time, so spring and autumn are the easiest times to book.

How much does storage and electric heater replacement cost in Plymouth?

Our guide range in South West England is £3,450–£10,450 for 3–5 rooms, including VAT. The exact price depends on the rooms, the pipe route and access, and we confirm it in writing after a free survey.

Do you cover all of Plymouth?

Yes, including PL2 and PL4. We also cover nearby Plymstock and Saltash.

Do I lose my Economy 7 tariff?

You can stay on it or switch. Heat pumps run when heat is needed, so many households move to a standard or smart tariff.
