Storage and electric heater replacement in Cambridge

The East of England is one of the sunniest and driest parts of the UK, which makes glazed rooms and lofts hard to keep cool. Flats and bungalows in Cambridge that have never had gas are the usual candidates for replacing storage heaters.

Old storage heaters in Cambridge homes are removed and recycled as part of the replacement. Cambridge is about 30 miles from Peterborough and falls within our Cambridgeshire coverage. That includes the CB5, CB21, CB22, CB23 and CB24 postcode districts.

Prices in Cambridge

Budget around £3,845–£11,695 for 3–5 rooms including VAT for storage and electric heater replacement in and around Cambridge. Prices here sit above the national middle, reflecting East of England labour rates and parking and access costs. Concealed pipework, access equipment for high walls and any electrical work are what push prices towards the upper figure. On our East of England figures, the Bungalow or house option (four rooms on one outdoor unit) is about £5,545–£8,895.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

For most houses in Cambridge, the outdoor unit is permitted development if it passes the MCS 020(a) noise check (37 dB(A) or less at the nearest neighbouring window) and stays within the size and number limits. We run that check on survey.

Cambridge is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

On a survey in Cambridge the engineer looks at room size, glazing, the route for pipes and drains, the electrics and where the outdoor unit can sit quietly, then the written quote follows. A survey in Cambridge usually takes one to two hours. We measure the rooms, check the walls and the consumer unit, agree the outdoor unit position with you and photograph the pipe routes.

FAQ

Common questions in Cambridge

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Cambridge?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

How much does storage and electric heater replacement cost in Cambridge?

Our guide range in the East of England is £3,845–£11,695 for 3–5 rooms, including VAT. The exact price depends on the rooms, the pipe route and access, and we confirm it in writing after a free survey.

Do you cover all of Cambridge?

Yes, including CB5, CB21, CB22, CB23 and CB24. We also cover nearby Huntingdon and Haverhill.

Is the survey in Cambridge really free?

Yes, for new installations. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead.

How soon can you survey in Cambridge?

We offer survey dates when you enquire. Early summer is the busiest time, so spring and autumn are the easiest times to book.

Do I lose my Economy 7 tariff?

You can stay on it or switch. Heat pumps run when heat is needed, so many households move to a standard or smart tariff.
