Storage and electric heater replacement across Bristol

Old storage heaters in Bristol homes are removed and recycled as part of the replacement. Flats and bungalows in Bristol that have never had gas are the usual candidates for replacing storage heaters. South West summers are milder on the coast, but sheltered towns and south-facing rooms still overheat, and efficient winter heating matters just as much.

Prices in Bristol

For Bristol, expect roughly £3,450 to £10,450 for 3–5 rooms, VAT included, adjusted for typical South West England rates. That is broadly in line with national guide prices. What moves a quote in Bristol up or down is mostly pipe length, how high the outdoor unit goes, and whether a new electrical circuit is needed. Typical Bungalow or house work (four rooms on one outdoor unit) lands around £4,950–£7,950 in this area.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

Bristol is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

Surveys in Bristol cover heat gain, pipe routes, electrics, access and noise to the nearest neighbour, so surprises on the day are rare. At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote.

FAQ

Storage and electric heater replacement in Bristol

Which towns in Bristol do you cover?

All of Bristol, including Bishopsworth, Brislington, Clifton and Fishponds. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Bristol?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

How much does storage and electric heater replacement cost in Bristol?

Our South West England guide range is £3,450–£10,450 for 3–5 rooms, including VAT.

Will an air-to-air heat pump be cheaper than storage heaters?

In most homes running costs fall significantly, because the heat pump uses a fraction of the electricity for the same heat.

Do I lose my Economy 7 tariff?

You can stay on it or switch. Heat pumps run when heat is needed, so many households move to a standard or smart tariff.
