Storage and electric heater replacement across Berkshire

For Reading landlords, swapping storage heaters for a heat pump is one of the more effective EPC improvements. Flats and bungalows in Reading that have never had gas are the usual candidates for replacing storage heaters. In the South East, loft rooms and glazed extensions can climb well above the outside temperature on a sunny afternoon.

Prices in Berkshire

In South East England, our guide range for storage and electric heater replacement is £4,195–£12,745 for 3–5 rooms, including VAT. Prices here sit above the national middle, reflecting South East England labour rates and parking and access costs. The biggest variables are the pipe route, access for the outdoor unit and the state of the consumer unit, all of which the survey settles. Typical Bungalow or house work (four rooms on one outdoor unit) lands around £6,045–£9,695 in this area.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

In England, most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it is no larger than 1.5 m³, meets the MCS 020(a) noise limit of 37 dB(A) at the nearest neighbour's window, and there are no more than two on a detached house or one on other houses. Listed buildings need consent.

If your home in Berkshire is replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and no gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, an MCS-certified air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which the MCS-certified installer claims and deducts from the price.

The survey

At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote. The free survey is where the real price is set: room measurements, pipe and drain routes, electrical checks and the outdoor unit position, all written into your quote.

FAQ

Storage and electric heater replacement in Berkshire

Which towns in Berkshire do you cover?

All of Berkshire, including Reading, Slough, Bracknell and Maidenhead. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Berkshire?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

How much does storage and electric heater replacement cost in Berkshire?

Our South East England guide range is £4,195–£12,745 for 3–5 rooms, including VAT.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

Can landlords use this to improve an EPC?

Replacing direct electric heating with a heat pump often improves an EPC rating. The exact change depends on the property, so ask a domestic energy assessor.

Will an air-to-air heat pump be cheaper than storage heaters?

In most homes running costs fall significantly, because the heat pump uses a fraction of the electricity for the same heat.
