Air-to-air heat pumps in Smethwick
Homes in Smethwick on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. In the West Midlands, sizing for winter heating first and then checking summer cooling usually gives the best all-year system.
Ask at your Smethwick survey whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could apply to your home. Smethwick lies roughly 3 miles from Birmingham, and we cover it as part of the West Midlands. That includes the B66 postcode district.
Prices in Smethwick
Air-to-air heat pumps in Smethwick typically come in at £2,895–£11,195 for 2–5 rooms including VAT, based on West Midlands rates. That is close to the UK middle for this kind of work. The biggest variables are the pipe route, access for the outdoor unit and the state of the consumer unit, all of which the survey settles. On our West Midlands figures, the Small home option (three or four rooms heated and cooled) is about £4,345–£7,295.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.
Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.
Planning and permissions
In England, most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it is no larger than 1.5 m³, meets the MCS 020(a) noise limit of 37 dB(A) at the nearest neighbour's window, and there are no more than two on a detached house or one on other houses. Listed buildings need consent.
Smethwick is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.
The survey
At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote. On a survey in Smethwick the engineer looks at room size, glazing, the route for pipes and drains, the electrics and where the outdoor unit can sit quietly, then the written quote follows.
