Air-to-air heat pumps in Birmingham
Hot spells in the West Midlands are shorter but intense, especially in loft rooms and rooms with big windows. Ask at your Birmingham survey whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could apply to your home.
Homes in Birmingham on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. We cover Birmingham and the rest of the West Midlands, including Coventry and Wolverhampton. That includes the B1, B2, B3, B4, B5 and 3 more postcode districts.
Prices in Birmingham
For Birmingham, expect roughly £2,895 to £11,195 for 2–5 rooms, VAT included, adjusted for typical West Midlands rates. That is close to the UK middle for this kind of work. What moves a quote in Birmingham up or down is mostly pipe length, how high the outdoor unit goes, and whether a new electrical circuit is needed. For reference, the Small home option in Birmingham (three or four rooms heated and cooled) usually comes to about £4,345–£7,295.
Two rooms
Living room and main bedroom on one outdoor unit.
Small home
Three or four rooms heated and cooled.
Whole home
Five or more rooms, sized to replace the existing heating.
Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.
Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.
Planning and permissions
For most houses in Birmingham, the outdoor unit is permitted development if it passes the MCS 020(a) noise check (37 dB(A) or less at the nearest neighbouring window) and stays within the size and number limits. We run that check on survey.
If your home in Birmingham is replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and no gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, an MCS-certified air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which the MCS-certified installer claims and deducts from the price.
The survey
Surveys in Birmingham cover heat gain, pipe routes, electrics, access and noise to the nearest neighbour, so surprises on the day are rare. A survey in Birmingham usually takes one to two hours. We measure the rooms, check the walls and the consumer unit, agree the outdoor unit position with you and photograph the pipe routes.
