Air-to-air heat pumps in Newcastle upon Tyne
In the North East, sizing for winter heating and then checking summer cooling usually gives the right system. Homes in Newcastle upon Tyne on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump.
We size every heat pump in Newcastle upon Tyne for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer. Newcastle upon Tyne is one of the main towns we cover in Tyne and Wear, alongside Sunderland and South Shields. Homes in NE1 are all within our coverage.
Prices in Newcastle upon Tyne
For Newcastle upon Tyne, expect roughly £2,695 to £10,545 for 2–5 rooms, VAT included, adjusted for typical North East England rates. Labour rates in North East England keep this slightly under the national middle. Longer or hidden pipe runs, high-level brackets and electrical upgrades are the usual reasons a quote lands at the top of the range. For reference, the Small home option in Newcastle upon Tyne (three or four rooms heated and cooled) usually comes to about £4,095–£6,845.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.
Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.
Planning and permissions
Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.
If your home in Newcastle upon Tyne is replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and no gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, an MCS-certified air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which the MCS-certified installer claims and deducts from the price.

Surveys in Newcastle upon Tyne cover heat gain, pipe routes, electrics, access and noise to the nearest neighbour, so surprises on the day are rare.
