Air-to-air heat pumps across Tyne and Wear

Ask at your Newcastle upon Tyne survey whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could apply to your home. Homes in Newcastle upon Tyne on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. Cold, windy North East winters favour a well-sized heat pump with an outdoor unit sheltered from the prevailing wind.

Prices in Tyne and Wear

For Tyne and Wear, expect roughly £2,695 to £10,545 for 2–5 rooms, VAT included, adjusted for typical North East England rates. That sits a little below the UK middle, reflecting typical North East England labour rates. The biggest variables are the pipe route, access for the outdoor unit and the state of the consumer unit, all of which the survey settles. For reference, the Small home option in Tyne and Wear (three or four rooms heated and cooled) usually comes to about £4,095–£6,845.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

In England, most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it is no larger than 1.5 m³, meets the MCS 020(a) noise limit of 37 dB(A) at the nearest neighbour's window, and there are no more than two on a detached house or one on other houses. Listed buildings need consent.

Tyne and Wear is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote. On a survey in Tyne and Wear the engineer looks at room size, glazing, the route for pipes and drains, the electrics and where the outdoor unit can sit quietly, then the written quote follows.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in Tyne and Wear

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in Tyne and Wear?

Our North East England guide range is £2,695–£10,545 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Tyne and Wear?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

Which towns in Tyne and Wear do you cover?

All of Tyne and Wear, including Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, South Shields and Gateshead. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Can an air-to-air heat pump replace my boiler?

It can replace the space heating, but not hot water. If any gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, even just for hot water, the installation does not qualify for the grant, and the heat pump itself must be MCS-certified.

Is an air-to-air heat pump just air conditioning?

Technically it is the same kind of equipment, but it is designed and sized to heat the home through winter, with cooling as a bonus.
