Air-to-air heat pumps across Surrey

Homes in Woking on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. Ask at your Woking survey whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could apply to your home. Hot spells reach the South East early, which makes spring the easiest time to arrange an installation.

Prices in Surrey

In South East England, our guide range for air-to-air heat pumps is £3,595–£13,945 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT. That is above the UK middle, mainly because labour and access cost more in South East England. Quotes move with the length of the pipe run, where the outdoor unit can sit and how much electrical work the job needs. As an example, the Small home option (three or four rooms heated and cooled) would typically be £5,445–£9,095 here.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

Surrey is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

We book surveys in Surrey at a time that suits you, including early evenings by arrangement, and send the written quote afterwards. A survey in Surrey usually takes one to two hours. We measure the rooms, check the walls and the consumer unit, agree the outdoor unit position with you and photograph the pipe routes.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in Surrey

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in Surrey?

Our South East England guide range is £3,595–£13,945 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Surrey?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

Which towns in Surrey do you cover?

All of Surrey, including Woking, Guildford, Esher and Redhill. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Can an air-to-air heat pump replace my boiler?

It can replace the space heating, but not hot water. If any gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, even just for hot water, the installation does not qualify for the grant, and the heat pump itself must be MCS-certified.

Will my energy bills go down?

If you are replacing direct electric heating, almost certainly. If you are replacing gas, savings depend on tariffs. We give an honest running-cost comparison at survey.
