Air-to-air heat pumps across North Yorkshire

We size every heat pump in York for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer. Homes in York on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. Cold Yorkshire winters mean sizing for heating first, then checking the summer cooling load.

Prices in North Yorkshire

In Yorkshire and the Humber, our guide range for air-to-air heat pumps is £2,795–£10,895 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT. That sits a little below the UK middle, reflecting typical Yorkshire and the Humber labour rates. Longer or hidden pipe runs, high-level brackets and electrical upgrades are the usual reasons a quote lands at the top of the range. For reference, the Small home option in North Yorkshire (three or four rooms heated and cooled) usually comes to about £4,245–£7,095.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

If your home in North Yorkshire is replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and no gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, an MCS-certified air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which the MCS-certified installer claims and deducts from the price.

The survey

On a survey in North Yorkshire the engineer looks at room size, glazing, the route for pipes and drains, the electrics and where the outdoor unit can sit quietly, then the written quote follows. At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in North Yorkshire

Which towns in North Yorkshire do you cover?

All of North Yorkshire, including York, Middlesbrough, Harrogate and Scarborough. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in North Yorkshire?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in North Yorkshire?

Our Yorkshire and the Humber guide range is £2,795–£10,895 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Is an air-to-air heat pump just air conditioning?

Technically it is the same kind of equipment, but it is designed and sized to heat the home through winter, with cooling as a bonus.

Will my energy bills go down?

If you are replacing direct electric heating, almost certainly. If you are replacing gas, savings depend on tariffs. We give an honest running-cost comparison at survey.
