Air-to-air heat pumps across Hampshire

We size every heat pump in Southampton for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer. Homes in Southampton on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. Summers in the South East are among the warmest in the country, so cooling often comes first, with efficient winter heating as a bonus.

Prices in Hampshire

Air-to-air heat pumps in Hampshire typically come in at £3,595–£13,945 for 2–5 rooms including VAT, based on South East England rates. South East England is one of the dearer parts of the UK for trades, which shows in the range. The biggest variables are the pipe route, access for the outdoor unit and the state of the consumer unit, all of which the survey settles. On our South East England figures, the Small home option (three or four rooms heated and cooled) is about £5,445–£9,095.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

Hampshire is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

Surveys in Hampshire cover heat gain, pipe routes, electrics, access and noise to the nearest neighbour, so surprises on the day are rare. At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in Hampshire

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Hampshire?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

Which towns in Hampshire do you cover?

All of Hampshire, including Southampton, Portsmouth, Basingstoke and Gosport. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in Hampshire?

Our South East England guide range is £3,595–£13,945 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Can an air-to-air heat pump replace my boiler?

It can replace the space heating, but not hot water. If any gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, even just for hot water, the installation does not qualify for the grant, and the heat pump itself must be MCS-certified.

Is an air-to-air heat pump just air conditioning?

Technically it is the same kind of equipment, but it is designed and sized to heat the home through winter, with cooling as a bonus.
