Air-to-air heat pumps in Southend-on-Sea
Bright summers in the East of England mean solar gain through glass is usually the biggest load to design for. Homes in Southend-on-Sea on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump.
We size every heat pump in Southend-on-Sea for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer. We cover Southend-on-Sea and the rest of Essex, including Basildon and Colchester. Homes in SS1 and SS22 are all within our coverage.
Prices in Southend-on-Sea
Guide prices around Southend-on-Sea run from £3,295 to £12,795 for 2–5 rooms including VAT. The East of England is one of the dearer parts of the UK for trades, which shows in the range. Concealed pipework, access equipment for high walls and any electrical work are what push prices towards the upper figure. Typical Small home work (three or four rooms heated and cooled) lands around £4,995–£8,345 in this area.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.
Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.
Planning and permissions
Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.
If your home in Southend-on-Sea is replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and no gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, an MCS-certified air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which the MCS-certified installer claims and deducts from the price.
The survey
The free survey is where the real price is set: room measurements, pipe and drain routes, electrical checks and the outdoor unit position, all written into your quote. A survey in Southend-on-Sea usually takes one to two hours. We measure the rooms, check the walls and the consumer unit, agree the outdoor unit position with you and photograph the pipe routes.
