Air-to-air heat pumps across Essex

Homes in Southend-on-Sea on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. We size every heat pump in Southend-on-Sea for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer. Long sunny spells in the East of England put conservatories and top-floor rooms under real pressure.

Prices in Essex

Our East of England guide price for air-to-air heat pumps is £3,295–£12,795 for 2–5 rooms, VAT included. Prices here sit above the national middle, reflecting East of England labour rates and parking and access costs. What moves a quote in Essex up or down is mostly pipe length, how high the outdoor unit goes, and whether a new electrical circuit is needed. For reference, the Small home option in Essex (three or four rooms heated and cooled) usually comes to about £4,995–£8,345.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

England's rules let most houses fit an outdoor unit without a planning application, as long as the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions are met. Flats, listed buildings and roof-mounted units are treated differently.

Essex is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

We book surveys in Essex at a time that suits you, including early evenings by arrangement, and send the written quote afterwards. The free survey is where the real price is set: room measurements, pipe and drain routes, electrical checks and the outdoor unit position, all written into your quote.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in Essex

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Essex?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

Which towns in Essex do you cover?

All of Essex, including Southend-on-Sea, Basildon, Colchester and Chelmsford. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in Essex?

Our East of England guide range is £3,295–£12,795 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Is an air-to-air heat pump just air conditioning?

Technically it is the same kind of equipment, but it is designed and sized to heat the home through winter, with cooling as a bonus.

Will my energy bills go down?

If you are replacing direct electric heating, almost certainly. If you are replacing gas, savings depend on tariffs. We give an honest running-cost comparison at survey.
