Air-to-air heat pumps across East Sussex

Ask at your Brighton survey whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could apply to your home. We size every heat pump in Brighton for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer. The South East sees some of the UK's warmest summer days, and south-facing rooms and conservatories feel it first.

Prices in East Sussex

For East Sussex, expect roughly £3,595 to £13,945 for 2–5 rooms, VAT included, adjusted for typical South East England rates. That is above the UK middle, mainly because labour and access cost more in South East England. The biggest variables are the pipe route, access for the outdoor unit and the state of the consumer unit, all of which the survey settles. On our South East England figures, the Small home option (three or four rooms heated and cooled) is about £5,445–£9,095.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

In England, most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it is no larger than 1.5 m³, meets the MCS 020(a) noise limit of 37 dB(A) at the nearest neighbour's window, and there are no more than two on a detached house or one on other houses. Listed buildings need consent.

If your home in East Sussex is replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and no gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, an MCS-certified air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which the MCS-certified installer claims and deducts from the price.

The survey

At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote. The free survey is where the real price is set: room measurements, pipe and drain routes, electrical checks and the outdoor unit position, all written into your quote.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in East Sussex

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in East Sussex?

Our South East England guide range is £3,595–£13,945 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Which towns in East Sussex do you cover?

All of East Sussex, including Brighton, Eastbourne, Hastings and Hove. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in East Sussex?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air?

Ofgem lists £2,500 for air-to-air heat pumps in residential properties in England and Wales. Your installer applies and deducts it from your quote.

Can an air-to-air heat pump replace my boiler?

It can replace the space heating, but not hot water. If any gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, even just for hot water, the installation does not qualify for the grant, and the heat pump itself must be MCS-certified.
