Air-to-air heat pumps in Derby

We size every heat pump in Derby for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer. Summer peaks in the East Midlands make bedrooms under the roof the hardest rooms to keep comfortable.

Homes in Derby on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. We cover Derby and the rest of Derbyshire, including Chesterfield and Long Eaton. Postcode districts we cover here include DE1.

Prices in Derby

Guide prices around Derby run from £2,845 to £10,995 for 2–5 rooms including VAT. That sits a little below the UK middle, reflecting typical East Midlands labour rates. What moves a quote in Derby up or down is mostly pipe length, how high the outdoor unit goes, and whether a new electrical circuit is needed. For reference, the Small home option in Derby (three or four rooms heated and cooled) usually comes to about £4,245–£7,145.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

Derby is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote. Surveys in Derby cover heat gain, pipe routes, electrics, access and noise to the nearest neighbour, so surprises on the day are rare.

FAQ

Common questions in Derby

Is the survey in Derby really free?

Yes, for new installations. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation to go ahead.

How long does the installation take in Derby?

Usually 2–4 days. We confirm the timing, and any days with no cooling or heating, in your written quote.

Can I get a price for Derby without a visit?

Yes, our online guide price tool gives a range in about a minute. A fixed price needs a survey, which is free for new installations.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Derby?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

How soon can you survey in Derby?

We offer survey dates when you enquire. Early summer is the busiest time, so spring and autumn are the easiest times to book.

Will my energy bills go down?

If you are replacing direct electric heating, almost certainly. If you are replacing gas, savings depend on tariffs. We give an honest running-cost comparison at survey.
