Multi-split air conditioning across Tyne and Wear

In a house in Newcastle upon Tyne with a usable loft, multi-split pipes can often run through it so the front stays clear. Twin and triple systems suit Newcastle upon Tyne homes where bedrooms sit above the kitchen and one rear wall can take the outdoor unit. North East summers are cooler, so heat pump heating is often the main draw, with cooling for warm spells.

Prices in Tyne and Wear

Guide prices around Tyne and Wear run from £2,245 to £7,145 for 2–4 rooms including VAT. Labour rates in North East England keep this slightly under the national middle. What moves a quote in Tyne and Wear up or down is mostly pipe length, how high the outdoor unit goes, and whether a new electrical circuit is needed. On our North East England figures, the Triple option (three rooms with mixed indoor styles and Wi-Fi control throughout) is about £3,095–£4,995.

Quad

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

The survey

At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote. On a survey in Tyne and Wear the engineer looks at room size, glazing, the route for pipes and drains, the electrics and where the outdoor unit can sit quietly, then the written quote follows.

FAQ

Multi-split air conditioning in Tyne and Wear

How much does multi-split air conditioning cost in Tyne and Wear?

Our North East England guide range is £2,245–£7,145 for 2–4 rooms, including VAT.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Tyne and Wear?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

Which towns in Tyne and Wear do you cover?

All of Tyne and Wear, including Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, South Shields and Gateshead. Each town has its own page below with local details.

What happens if the outdoor unit fails?

All rooms on that outdoor unit stop until it is repaired. That is the trade-off for a tidier exterior; separate single splits avoid it.

Can I add another room later?

Only if the outdoor unit has spare ports and capacity. If you think you might extend, tell us at survey and we will size for it.
