Air-to-air heat pumps across Suffolk

We size every heat pump in Ipswich for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer. Ask at your Ipswich survey whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could apply to your home. Bright summers in the East of England mean solar gain through glass is usually the biggest load to design for.

Prices in Suffolk

Guide prices around Suffolk run from £3,295 to £12,795 for 2–5 rooms including VAT. Prices here sit above the national middle, reflecting East of England labour rates and parking and access costs. Concealed pipework, access equipment for high walls and any electrical work are what push prices towards the upper figure. As an example, the Small home option (three or four rooms heated and cooled) would typically be £4,995–£8,345 here.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

If your home in Suffolk is replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and no gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, an MCS-certified air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which the MCS-certified installer claims and deducts from the price.

The survey

At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote. On a survey in Suffolk the engineer looks at room size, glazing, the route for pipes and drains, the electrics and where the outdoor unit can sit quietly, then the written quote follows.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in Suffolk

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Suffolk?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

Which towns in Suffolk do you cover?

All of Suffolk, including Ipswich, Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds and Haverhill. Each town has its own page below with local details.

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in Suffolk?

Our East of England guide range is £3,295–£12,795 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

Can an air-to-air heat pump replace my boiler?

It can replace the space heating, but not hot water. If any gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, even just for hot water, the installation does not qualify for the grant, and the heat pump itself must be MCS-certified.

How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air?

Ofgem lists £2,500 for air-to-air heat pumps in residential properties in England and Wales. Your installer applies and deducts it from your quote.
