Air-to-air heat pumps in Cardiff
In South and Mid Wales, efficient heating is often as important as cooling. Homes in Cardiff on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump.
Ask at your Cardiff survey whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could apply to your home. We cover Cardiff and the rest of South Glamorgan, including Barry and Penarth. That includes the CF10, CF11, CF14, CF15, CF23 and CF24 postcode districts.
Prices in Cardiff
Guide prices around Cardiff run from £2,695 to £10,545 for 2–5 rooms including VAT. It is a touch below the UK middle, as trade rates in South and Mid Wales tend to be. Quotes move with the length of the pipe run, where the outdoor unit can sit and how much electrical work the job needs. On our South and Mid Wales figures, the Small home option (three or four rooms heated and cooled) is about £4,095–£6,845.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.
Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.
Planning and permissions
In Wales, outdoor units of up to 1.5 m³ that meet MCS 020a noise limits are usually permitted development on houses; listed buildings need consent, and in conservation areas a unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing a road.
If your home in Cardiff is replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and no gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, an MCS-certified air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which the MCS-certified installer claims and deducts from the price.
The survey
A survey in Cardiff usually takes one to two hours. We measure the rooms, check the walls and the consumer unit, agree the outdoor unit position with you and photograph the pipe routes. At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote.
