Air-to-air heat pumps across the Highlands

Homes in Inverness on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. We size every heat pump in Inverness for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer. Wind and salt air in the north of Scotland mean outdoor unit placement and protection need extra thought.

Prices in the Highlands

Our Highlands, Islands and North East Scotland guide price for air-to-air heat pumps is £2,645–£10,195 for 2–5 rooms, VAT included. That sits a little below the UK middle, reflecting typical Highlands, Islands and North East Scotland labour rates. Longer or hidden pipe runs, high-level brackets and electrical upgrades are the usual reasons a quote lands at the top of the range. Typical Small home work (three or four rooms heated and cooled) lands around £3,945–£6,645 in this area.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not cover Scotland; Home Energy Scotland can tell you what support is available.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

In Scotland, planning conditions for outdoor units depend on the property type and location; conservation areas and listed buildings need particular care.

The survey

On a survey in the Highlands the engineer looks at room size, glazing, the route for pipes and drains, the electrics and where the outdoor unit can sit quietly, then the written quote follows. We book surveys in the Highlands at a time that suits you, including early evenings by arrangement, and send the written quote afterwards.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in the Highlands

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in the Highlands?

Our Highlands, Islands and North East Scotland guide range is £2,645–£10,195 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in the Highlands?

Scotland has its own permitted development rules for outdoor units, with stricter treatment of listed buildings and conservation areas. We confirm the position for your home on survey.

Which towns in the Highlands do you cover?

All of the Highlands, including Inverness, Fort William, Alness and Aviemore. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation. Remote parts of the area are by arrangement, with travel quoted first.

Can an air-to-air heat pump replace my boiler?

It can replace the space heating, but not hot water. If any gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, even just for hot water, the installation does not qualify for the grant, and the heat pump itself must be MCS-certified.

Is an air-to-air heat pump just air conditioning?

Technically it is the same kind of equipment, but it is designed and sized to heat the home through winter, with cooling as a bonus.
