Air-to-air heat pumps across Hertfordshire

Homes in Watford on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. We size every heat pump in Watford for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer. Low rainfall and long summer days in the East of England make south-facing rooms the first to overheat.

Prices in Hertfordshire

Budget around £3,295–£12,795 for 2–5 rooms including VAT for air-to-air heat pumps in and around Hertfordshire. That is above the UK middle, mainly because labour and access cost more in the East of England. The biggest variables are the pipe route, access for the outdoor unit and the state of the consumer unit, all of which the survey settles. On our East of England figures, the Small home option (three or four rooms heated and cooled) is about £4,995–£8,345.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

For most houses in Hertfordshire, the outdoor unit is permitted development if it passes the MCS 020(a) noise check (37 dB(A) or less at the nearest neighbouring window) and stays within the size and number limits. We run that check on survey.

Hertfordshire is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

We book surveys in Hertfordshire at a time that suits you, including early evenings by arrangement, and send the written quote afterwards. At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in Hertfordshire

Which towns in Hertfordshire do you cover?

All of Hertfordshire, including Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage and St Albans. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in Hertfordshire?

Our East of England guide range is £3,295–£12,795 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Hertfordshire?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air?

Ofgem lists £2,500 for air-to-air heat pumps in residential properties in England and Wales. Your installer applies and deducts it from your quote.

Can an air-to-air heat pump replace my boiler?

It can replace the space heating, but not hot water. If any gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, even just for hot water, the installation does not qualify for the grant, and the heat pump itself must be MCS-certified.
