Air-to-air heat pumps in Manchester

Damp North West weather makes the dehumidifying mode of a modern split system genuinely useful for much of the year. We size every heat pump in Manchester for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer.

Ask at your Manchester survey whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could apply to your home. As well as Manchester itself, our Greater Manchester coverage takes in Oldham, Wigan and the towns around them. Postcode districts we cover here include M1, M2, M3, M4, M11 and 3 more.

Prices in Manchester

Budget around £2,795–£10,895 for 2–5 rooms including VAT for air-to-air heat pumps in and around Manchester. That sits a little below the UK middle, reflecting typical North West England labour rates. Longer or hidden pipe runs, high-level brackets and electrical upgrades are the usual reasons a quote lands at the top of the range. On our North West England figures, the Small home option (three or four rooms heated and cooled) is about £4,245–£7,095.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

Manchester is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

A survey in Manchester usually takes one to two hours. We measure the rooms, check the walls and the consumer unit, agree the outdoor unit position with you and photograph the pipe routes. On a survey in Manchester the engineer looks at room size, glazing, the route for pipes and drains, the electrics and where the outdoor unit can sit quietly, then the written quote follows.

FAQ

Common questions in Manchester

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Manchester?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

Do you cover all of Manchester?

Yes, including M1, M2, M3, M4, M11 and 3 more. We also cover nearby Salford and Old Trafford.

Who carries out the work in Manchester?

F-gas certified engineers working for Aircon Installers. Your contract is with S&K Property Investments and Improvement Ltd, which trades as Aircon Installers, and your quote names who will do the work and the F-gas company certificate that covers it.

Can I get a price for Manchester without a visit?

Yes, our online guide price tool gives a range in about a minute. A fixed price needs a survey, which is free for new installations.

How soon can you survey in Manchester?

We offer survey dates when you enquire. Early summer is the busiest time, so spring and autumn are the easiest times to book.

Can an air-to-air heat pump replace my boiler?

It can replace the space heating, but not hot water. If any gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, even just for hot water, the installation does not qualify for the grant, and the heat pump itself must be MCS-certified.
