Air-to-air heat pumps across Devon

Ask at your Plymouth survey whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could apply to your home. Homes in Plymouth on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. South West summers are milder on the coast, but sheltered towns and south-facing rooms still overheat, and efficient winter heating matters just as much.

Prices in Devon

Guide prices around Devon run from £2,950 to £11,450 for 2–5 rooms including VAT. That is close to the UK middle for this kind of work. Longer or hidden pipe runs, high-level brackets and electrical upgrades are the usual reasons a quote lands at the top of the range. For reference, the Small home option in Devon (three or four rooms heated and cooled) usually comes to about £4,450–£7,450.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

In England, most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it is no larger than 1.5 m³, meets the MCS 020(a) noise limit of 37 dB(A) at the nearest neighbour's window, and there are no more than two on a detached house or one on other houses. Listed buildings need consent.

Devon is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

On a survey in Devon the engineer looks at room size, glazing, the route for pipes and drains, the electrics and where the outdoor unit can sit quietly, then the written quote follows. At the survey we look at how each room is used, where the sun hits it and how the pipes can reach the outside wall, then put it all in a written quote.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in Devon

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Devon?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

Which towns in Devon do you cover?

All of Devon, including Plymouth, Exeter, Paignton and Torquay. Each town has its own page below with local details.

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in Devon?

Our South West England guide range is £2,950–£11,450 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Can an air-to-air heat pump replace my boiler?

It can replace the space heating, but not hot water. If any gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, even just for hot water, the installation does not qualify for the grant, and the heat pump itself must be MCS-certified.

Will my energy bills go down?

If you are replacing direct electric heating, almost certainly. If you are replacing gas, savings depend on tariffs. We give an honest running-cost comparison at survey.
