Air-to-air heat pumps across Cumbria

Homes in Carlisle on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. We size every heat pump in Carlisle for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer. Damp North West weather makes the dehumidifying mode of a modern split system genuinely useful for much of the year.

Prices in Cumbria

Our North West England guide price for air-to-air heat pumps is £2,795–£10,895 for 2–5 rooms, VAT included. It is a touch below the UK middle, as trade rates in North West England tend to be. What moves a quote in Cumbria up or down is mostly pipe length, how high the outdoor unit goes, and whether a new electrical circuit is needed. As an example, the Small home option (three or four rooms heated and cooled) would typically be £4,245–£7,095 here.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

England's rules let most houses fit an outdoor unit without a planning application, as long as the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions are met. Flats, listed buildings and roof-mounted units are treated differently.

If your home in Cumbria is replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and no gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, an MCS-certified air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which the MCS-certified installer claims and deducts from the price.

The survey

We book surveys in Cumbria at a time that suits you, including early evenings by arrangement, and send the written quote afterwards. The free survey is where the real price is set: room measurements, pipe and drain routes, electrical checks and the outdoor unit position, all written into your quote.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in Cumbria

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Cumbria?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in Cumbria?

Our North West England guide range is £2,795–£10,895 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

Which towns in Cumbria do you cover?

All of Cumbria, including Carlisle, Barrow-in-Furness, Kendal and Whitehaven. Each town has its own page below with local details.

How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air?

Ofgem lists £2,500 for air-to-air heat pumps in residential properties in England and Wales. Your installer applies and deducts it from your quote.

Can an air-to-air heat pump replace my boiler?

It can replace the space heating, but not hot water. If any gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, even just for hot water, the installation does not qualify for the grant, and the heat pump itself must be MCS-certified.
