Air-to-air heat pumps across Buckinghamshire

Homes in Milton Keynes on electric, oil or LPG heating are the ones most likely to benefit from an air-to-air heat pump. Ask at your Milton Keynes survey whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could apply to your home. In the South East, loft rooms and glazed extensions can climb well above the outside temperature on a sunny afternoon.

Prices in Buckinghamshire

Guide prices around Buckinghamshire run from £3,595 to £13,945 for 2–5 rooms including VAT. Prices here sit above the national middle, reflecting South East England labour rates and parking and access costs. What moves a quote in Buckinghamshire up or down is mostly pipe length, how high the outdoor unit goes, and whether a new electrical circuit is needed. For reference, the Small home option in Buckinghamshire (three or four rooms heated and cooled) usually comes to about £5,445–£9,095.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

Buckinghamshire is in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme area, so eligible homes replacing oil, gas, LPG or electric heating may be able to get £2,500 off an air-to-air heat pump, as long as no fossil-fuel boiler stays in use. An MCS-certified installer must claim it; we confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

The survey

On a survey in Buckinghamshire the engineer looks at room size, glazing, the route for pipes and drains, the electrics and where the outdoor unit can sit quietly, then the written quote follows. A survey in Buckinghamshire usually takes one to two hours. We measure the rooms, check the walls and the consumer unit, agree the outdoor unit position with you and photograph the pipe routes.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in Buckinghamshire

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Buckinghamshire?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in Buckinghamshire?

Our South East England guide range is £3,595–£13,945 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

Which towns in Buckinghamshire do you cover?

All of Buckinghamshire, including Milton Keynes, High Wycombe, Aylesbury and Bletchley. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Is an air-to-air heat pump just air conditioning?

Technically it is the same kind of equipment, but it is designed and sized to heat the home through winter, with cooling as a bonus.

Can an air-to-air heat pump replace my boiler?

It can replace the space heating, but not hot water. If any gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, even just for hot water, the installation does not qualify for the grant, and the heat pump itself must be MCS-certified.
