Air-to-air heat pumps across Bedfordshire

Ask at your Luton survey whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant could apply to your home. We size every heat pump in Luton for a cold winter day, then check the cooling side is right for summer. Bright summers in the East of England mean solar gain through glass is usually the biggest load to design for.

Prices in Bedfordshire

In the East of England, our guide range for air-to-air heat pumps is £3,295–£12,795 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT. That is above the UK middle, mainly because labour and access cost more in the East of England. Quotes move with the length of the pipe run, where the outdoor unit can sit and how much electrical work the job needs. For reference, the Small home option in Bedfordshire (three or four rooms heated and cooled) usually comes to about £4,995–£8,345.

Prices are shown before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The £2,500 air-to-air grant applies only to eligible homes in England and Wales, using an MCS-certified heat pump installed by an MCS-certified installer, who applies for the grant and deducts it from the price. We confirm eligibility, and which installer applies, before you commit.

Guide prices show VAT at 20%. HMRC treats most fixed air conditioners and air-to-air heat pumps installed in homes as energy-saving materials, zero-rated until 31 March 2027 when we supply and fit them. If your installation qualifies, your quote shows 0% VAT and a lower price. Servicing, repairs, cleaning and controls are charged at 20%.

Planning and permissions

Since 29 May 2025, England's permitted development rules allow larger outdoor units (up to 1.5 m³) and no longer require a 1 m gap to the boundary, provided the MCS 020(a) noise check is met. Listed buildings and pitched-roof installs still need permission.

If your home in Bedfordshire is replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and no gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, an MCS-certified air-to-air heat pump may qualify for the £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, which the MCS-certified installer claims and deducts from the price.

The survey

Surveys in Bedfordshire cover heat gain, pipe routes, electrics, access and noise to the nearest neighbour, so surprises on the day are rare. A survey in Bedfordshire usually takes one to two hours. We measure the rooms, check the walls and the consumer unit, agree the outdoor unit position with you and photograph the pipe routes.

FAQ

Air-to-air heat pumps in Bedfordshire

Which towns in Bedfordshire do you cover?

All of Bedfordshire, including Luton, Bedford, Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard. Each town has its own page below with local details.

Will the outdoor unit need planning permission in Bedfordshire?

Most houses can have an outdoor unit under permitted development if it meets the size, number and MCS 020(a) noise conditions. Flats and listed buildings usually need permission or consent. We check on survey.

How much do air-to-air heat pumps cost in Bedfordshire?

Our East of England guide range is £3,295–£12,795 for 2–5 rooms, including VAT.

Is the survey free?

Yes, for new installations on the mainland. The survey and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

Can an air-to-air heat pump replace my boiler?

It can replace the space heating, but not hot water. If any gas, oil or LPG boiler stays in use, even just for hot water, the installation does not qualify for the grant, and the heat pump itself must be MCS-certified.

Is an air-to-air heat pump just air conditioning?

Technically it is the same kind of equipment, but it is designed and sized to heat the home through winter, with cooling as a bonus.
